Machined Meat Mallet
December 2019
This project introduced me to the beauty of machining and flying chips, but also gave me a fundamental understanding of designing for machinability. I machined this two part assembly on a manual mill and lathe. All final product dimensions were within +/- 0.005" of the given drawing dimensions.
I used the machining skills from this project to fabricate a steering column for the Baja car. I also used them when working at my internship with Honeywell Aerospace to modify client's designs so that they could be manufactured by our machinists.
Manual lathe
Learned how to turn down, thread, fillet, and knurl round material.
Manual mill
Learned how to reposition the workpiece to achieve desired cuts, square up stock material, and tap threads.
